What a start to the College year!

First up, Michigan gets stunned by DIV 1AA Apelachian State and their spread speed offense. Then the big blue get trumped again by Oregon and alarm bells are ringing. Their only win of the year comes against the Irish who can't even score an offensive TD! RB Mike Hart must be kicking himslef for not declaring last year...

As for the Irish, Charlie Weiss has run off his only other quality starter to transfer, Jimmy Clausen is no where near what he was hyped to be out of High School and is definitely not even close at the moment to older brother Casey. Weiss, being an offensive genius can't even score an Offensive TD - what the hell is going on in South Bend?

On positive's - LSU is simply rolling. Losing Jamarcus Russel won't hurt them at all and i predict an LSU v Florida shootout with Tim Tebow for the National Championship. Anyone else care to speculate this early in the season who the big dance will be between? USC will be strong but i can't see anyone beating these two teams - at least Florida anyway.

Any opinions on players performing well this year?

I still have a Virginia Tech to win, and move up, Kansas beat Missouri and then lose the Big XII championship game to Oklahoma, and downward movement. Could / should not happen, but who knows in this season.

This is one of the most rotten things to happen this weekend in College Football (aside from the Big East's blatant attempt to get WVU into the national championship by raping Pitt ... and STILL failing).
It's even more rotten when you consider that Missouri (6) finished ranked higher in the BCS than Kansas (8). I just don't get it...

Meanwhile, Ohio State, who hasn't played in weeks, gets to just sit there and watch other teams fall by the wayside.
There's something horribly wrong with the system and the Big Televen is to blame. While most other conferences are playing championship games (and thus forced into playing a good opponent late and risking a late loss) these teams are all having a bye week and watching half the highly ranked teams drop away.

I really hope LSU smack them around worse than Florida did...

I was kinda implying that when I wrote the thing. Hawaii hasn't played anyone, though it's tough when you have to PAY people to play you. Find me a reason why any quality team would want to travel to Hawaii to play? Michigan State paid them NOT to play this year if I remember correctly. When teams in pwoer conferences are ducking you, shouldn't that say something?

But besides the point, your margin of victory thing is the reason we have the BCS in the first place - to do away with that. I remember when OSU went unbeaten but every win was like 3 points. Who cares what the margin of victory is - if you're winning, you're winning. Do you think Michigan would have cared if they beat Appalachian State by 1 point if it meant NOT LOSING TO THEM? You'll take a win, no matter how ugly or to who, over a loss any day of the week. It's actually a shame that Hawaii gets UGA in the sugar - it's virtually a home game for georgia - though they got stomped by a team running the spread last year (WVU).

And well, my OSU prediction looks like it will stand after all...

....but where's the love for the only unbeaten left in college football??? Hawaii's 12-0! Beat Boise State (still ranked)....and....um....well....Fresno State....um...er.....

But I say, if the BCS wants to do what's right, they should pit OSU (once beaten conference champ), against Hawaii (unbeaten), and tell OU, LSU, UGA, VT, and USC to shove it. They all have 2 losses. You wanna play for the national title, you can't lose twice - no matter who to or how strong or weak your schedule is.

Of course, it'll never happen. But it should

What an absolutely pitiful end to a shambolic (regular) season of College Football...

West Virginia just laid the biggest egg since Big Bird knocked up a dinosaur, and Missouri's getting whipped by Oklahoma (a little less unexpected).

Two teams, one win away from the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, and they can't get up for a game against lesser opponents.

I can only really comment on WVU since it's the game I've watched... but I can't find any words for it.

What disgusted me the most was the Big East officials, who have been nothing short of atrocious all season, were so BLATANTLY throwing b.s. flags to keep WVU in it (obviously, a National Championship berth gets the conference a boatload more moolah). Pitt had a touchdown and a key first down called back on God-awful holding penalties, and the play-clock seemed to start a whole lot faster for Pitt than for WVU.

I'll admit, I wanted WVU to win for the same selfish reasons - more cash for the Big East (and South Florida would have gotten the 2nd-biggest chunk) - but after the 2nd holding flag, I almost felt sorry for Dave Wannstedt and I started to want Pitt to win.

.... sigh ...

So now what?

Does Georgia get to play in the National Championship game? They're ranked 4, and 1 and 2 are gone... but Georgia didn't even win the SEC. They didn't even PLAY in the SEC Championship Game!! And will they face Ohio State, who have no right to be even close to the top of the country considering their (lack of) body of work.

Honestly.... I'm thinking we go back to the preseason top two - let's have USC and LSU fight it out and put this whole ridiculous season of football behind us.

Gotta say I like Mizzou's chances for their first national title game ever, and here's why -

Better defense than Kansas, same high scoring offense, playing at a neutral site, and they've seen Oklahoma once before, and played them very tough on the road. If they beat Kansas, they'll get them at a neutral site (though Texas is hardly neutral in this case) again in the Big 12 championship game. You've gotta like those chances!

Now, as far as LSU goes, there's no one in the SEC west that REALLY sets the world on fire, and as for a SEC championship rematch...Who really gives them a game out of the east? Georgia - Tennessee - florida? None of them have beaten LSU this year. Georgira and Florida came close though...in the Georgia dome, UGA may have the best chance. But I wouldn't bet much on it.

At least they had an excuse, losing Dennis Dixon early, but who really wants to set the pace this season?!?!

This makes it seven teams that have been in the top two this season, and all have lost.
LSU's been lucky (?) enough to get back up there, but they could easily drop another... sure looks like the secret's going to be "get into the top 2 as late as you can".

Kansas/Oklahoma/Missouri and West Virginia in the National Championship Game?????

So... I'm getting there (kinda)... obviously USF let me down immensely, and BC took a hit (well two hits - hope they don't repeat the three straight losses like other notable #2's from this season).

I still need Virginia Tech to win out and move up, Kansas to beat Missouri then lose the Big XII championship game to Oklahoma and both move down. Could/should happen, but who knows this season.

I would love to see Ohio State lose to Michigan and fall even further, but I think they might take care of them. Still, hopefully not by enough to elevate them...

Of course... the BCS is still a joke because 60 of the 119 coaches get one-third of the say.
For example, how the hell does UCF get a vote in the coaches' poll and USF misses out completely? We beat them 64-12!! (not to mention the Auburn and WVU wins) Oh sure, they're on top of C-USA, but then what division's ranked behind three 1-AA divisions at the moment (according to Sagarin) does that really mean anything?
I guess Coach O'Leary (why does HE get a vote) figured his boys needed a point.

You betcha. As I alredy pointed out, USC lost to Stanford (and they lost to Oregon, with Cal yet to play!). I also take minor credit for saying Callahan had no balls - but I had no idea he was this inept! 76 points by KANSAS!!!??!?!??!?!?! Incredibly, he hasn't been fired yet.

Ok, so Rutgers didn't pan out, but OSU is looking REAL good right now after dismantling PSU and Wisconsin. Oklahoma/LSU is a real possibility if LSU wins the SEC but loses ground in the BCS points cause of Oregon (unlikely, but possible). Rose prediction dead in the water - looking more like WVU v. Oregon...boy, sign me up for that one! Will either team run the ball? Orange still has a shot, BC still leads the ACC and controls their own destiny. USC is out - to be replaced by loser of Big 12 Championship? Could be either Mizzou, Kansas, or Oklahoma at this point.

So overall, I'm doing about 75% my my innacurate calculations - someone call ESPN and get me a contract!

What a homecoming show the USF Football Bulls put on for the alumnae today..........

USF score 14 points before their offense even takes the field... when they finally do, we go backwards and have our punt blocked and recovered for a TD to go DOWN 17-14.
USF's drives in the 1st half ended with: Punt (blocked), Int, Fumble, Fumble, Int, FG, Int, Punt, FG. (and the first of the 2nd half ended with a fumble as well)

And yet.... with 8 seconds to go, we're on the Bearcat 18 with two shots into the endzone to win. First shot dropped, 2nd shot our WR was mugged but no call/no catch/game over.

So.... my prediction that USF would win out is clearly out the window. Honestly, Syracuse, Louisville and Pitt are going to be a challenge if we keep this crap up.

My brain and pride hurt too much to even think about the other results right now.
(except the #2 curse has struck again: BC, it was a week overdue, hope you enjoyed the run... oh yeah, and Navy beating Notre Dame, snapping a 43-year losing streak - that's cool)

Hey, UConn has been steadily improving each year since they made the move up to D-I, and it shows. Sometimes, it's better to build programs from within your conference (UConn, USF) than poaching them (Miami, Louisville).

Now, of course, comes the really fun part of the season, where we now have 5 unbeaten teams and the top 5 ranked teams in the AP are all from different conferences, and 6 of the top seven. What this means is, if OSU, BC, LSU, ASU AND KU win out (not counting Hawaii of course), with the top 4 remaining the same, there'll be a possible 4 unbeaten teams, with 2 NOT playing for the national championship. Yeah, that happened in my NCAA video game once - it almost reset itself. I had 6 unbeatens from the major conferences. Imagine if it happens in real life? My god, the fallout would literally make the SEC uninhabitable for 25 years...not that parts of it isn't already (sorry LSU, Ole Miss, MSU...Georgia, Florida, oh you get the idea.)

I love BC winning in Blacksburg, but they finish off at Clemson - not an easy place to play for anyone, and late in the season, the Tigers have been known to knock off top teams.

Still not convinced with Kansas - figure they lose to Missouri or at least to OK in the Big 12 title game. ASU probably won't win out - schedule is just too hard, at Oregon, then USC 3 weeks apart. WVU won't get in for sure now, that loss to USF looks worse every week. And of course, look out for the Rainbow Warriors - they finally get a ranked opponent in Boise State - a win there coupled with a Mizzou/Kansas loss (inevitable since they play each other), and Oregon/ASU (ditto) could propel them into the top 10. Are they likely to get into the BCS title game? No - but a Fiesta bowl appearance is likely. Maybe the Fiesta bowl should change their alliance to the WAC champion - since it's starting to become somewhat of a trend!

Trust me, BC didn't win this one, VT really let them have it. In fact, VT pretty much beat down BC for three quarters but just seemed to think that 10 points was enough. With 3 minutes to go I was starting to think so, too.

BC will lose two of their remaining games. One will be enough, they'll sink like a stone in the rankings when it happens.

I'll take your views on the Big 12 as read because I'll admit I've been far too concerned with my own backyard this season (but you're right, I think I did overlook Missouri)....

I was almost going to post something about Hawaii. I think they could be the lowest ranked undefeated team ever; certainly well outside the top 12 they'll need to be for an at-large bid. Top two? No chance.

Of course, the main thing to keep in mind that no one knows diddly squat this season, and they're going to need to resurface all the fields to paper if any of these analysts want to keep their jobs next season.

Don't get too excited about Kansas. After seeing Mizzou obliterate the vaunted Texas tech offense, I'm sure the Tigers can find a way to shut down KU and Man-gina's pedestrian attack. Granted, cause of the downy soft schedule, KU will probably enter the finale against Mizzou unbeaten, but they'll lose and lose big to them. Expect Mizzou/Oklahoma in a rematch for the big 12 title, and expect OK to NOT want to see Mizzou again.

WVU may or may not win out, they still have to play Rutgers on the road, which has proven to not be a friendly place for ranked opponents. I don't see them getting in the back door.

Everyone is so high on LSU, but considering how tough the SEC is this year, I don't think a single team will come out with less than 2 losses. Really, every team except LSU now has 2, and are gonna tell me LSU will make it through the conference schedule, plus the SEC title game with only 1 loss? Unlikely.

You know who may really surprise people is Arizona State. While they haven't really played anyone, they are 7-0 and get Cal and USC at home. Both teams have lost at home this year, and road games are always tougher in the scortching desert. The real test will be at Oregon in two weeks. If they win that one, expect a TON of talk about them being national champ darlings.

Now, here's the really funny thing, Hawaii is still unbeaten and get Fresno State, Boise State, and Washington AT HOME. While none of those teams are ranked, Hawaii is #14 nationally, and if the top teams falter (as they will have to as some play each other), Hawaii could conceivably move into the top 5, possibly the top 2 if they keep winning and the world collapses around them. Could Hawaii be the next non-BCS power to crash the money party? I'm betting they will.

Someone needs to teach VT the game goes for 60 minutes, not 58. Oh wait... someone just did.

Still, this is one of those good results for USF. I am still sure BC will lose to someone, because they sure as heck didn't deserve to win this one. That should drop both BC and VT down below USF once we win out :)

And really... if you look at the BCS Standings as they are now, you have to think that:

are going to lose at least one more game .... (and (12)USC I think are gone - their wins aren't quality, and their loss was atrocious)

I think Ohio State will lose to Penn State this weekend, and Michigan later, even though their defense has finally come to the party.

BC will lose tonight at VT. BC has no quality wins. They'll drop further than USF did (we are still #5 in the computers) but will have enough games left to move back up again.

Arizona State still has Cal, UCLA, Oregon and USC. They could lose all four.

Florida still faces Georgia and South Carolina on the road, then a possible SEC title game. They'll be lucky to only lose one.

Kansas has Missouri then a probable title game against Oklahoma. I don't think they win both.

That leaves
(3)LSU
(5)Oregon
(6)Oklahoma
(7)Virginia Tech
(8)West Virginia
(10)USF
... the most likely to win out and move up.

LSU wins out, and wins the SEC. Hope they really put the hurt on Bama and Saban, too.

Oregon gets USC and Arizona State at home. Unless Oregon State really upsets the applecart in the last week, they'll win out. How badly does the loss to Cal hurt them in the polls? Time will tell.

Oklahoma could almost mail it in for the rest of the season, save for the Big 12 title game. Win that and I think they jump Oregon for the chance to play LSU in the Championship Game.

Unless... Virginia Tech wins out and wins big. They have BC coming in tonight, and I think they stomp them, then a tester at Virginia to close out the season. Win that one and the ACC, and THEY might jump Oregon and face LSU.

As for WVU and USF... it's Big East games all the way home. The Mountaineers should account for Rutgers this weekend, otherwise neither team plays any "big" opponents. Upside - they should win out. Downside - not many style points to be earned.

Dan it looks like the Bulls poor showing (and the horrid officiating) have killed the Big East's best chance of making it to the NC this year..... unless WVU wins out and keeps climbing the rankings, and plenty of other results go their way.

Of course... if that happens, and USF wins out too (we should, but it might be tougher with a few key injuries now) then we'll still win the Big East title (RU will finish 5-2, USF and WVU will finish atop at 6-1, and USF owns the tiebreaker).

The problem is the human pollsters still get 2/3 of the vote, and they don't want a Big East team there (certainly not USF, anyway).
Come on computers, pull us through!

Well well - so far, my predictions (save rutgers) are holding up quite nicely. AND, I still maintain 90% on that prediction because South Florida is still a Big East team, if they get into the BCS title game, I'll have at least picked the right conference to be represented. Woo!

As I predicted, USC lost - and it was at home to Stanford! Figured it would have come a bit later on - maybe that's why they stumbled against the Cardinal.

ND continues to suck - expect them to go 2-10 and have the worst finish for the Irish in modern history. Also, expect them to lose to Navy.

Big 12 is looking a bit more fun with the Big 12 North finally showing some signs of life after 7 years of slumber, but the elite still can't compete against the South (see Mizzou's gag job against OK). K state and Colorado pulled upsets, sure, but that all they were - UPSETS. Not convincing wins over equal opponents. Talk to me when a North team beats a South team in the Big 12 championship game. Until then, I'm not interested.

SEC is tops in the land again, but no one is undefeated. Say goodbye to the BCS title game.

ACC is GOD AWFUL. BC will get exposed as a fraud when they play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg this weekend. Unless they win. In which case, pencil them in now as the team to replace Auburn and Texas as the biggest whiners in BCS history when they get left out in the cold.
