GA Nationals 2010

Since we now have a set date for nationals and the brotherly love of the UK tour has started to wear off it must be time to focus the smack across the state borders...

Most regular seasons are finished or into playoffs and individual state programs are underway so lets band together and send the love right across this fair land...

News I have heard:

1. Every victorian player has to undergo a level one field goal kicking course
2. SA boys are trying to get cloning legalised so they can have a full team of bennetts
3. ACT are just trying to stay awake living in the most boring city in OZ
4. QLD have just handed a set of jerseys to the stingrays and told them they have a road game in april
5. WA are checking out potential strip joints i mean sponsors in victoria

GASA Season 2009

I thought it was about time for a new thread that we can discuss the upcoming season rather trolling through pages on the old thread

So it sounds like this may be quite a different year

How are the teams looking in preparation for 2009?

There have been a coaching changes at the Razorbacks and Eagles (these are all i know of)

I hear that the Chiefs have great numbers again. They have recruited a Big College lineman. I see them being the yard stick this season. This is a great young team looking to take the next step.

I hear that the Razorbacks have lost a number of veterans this season, that combined with the coaching changes it will be the first in quite a while that we might not know what to expect for the Razorbacks.

I hear that the Eagles again have good numbers (how do they do it?). This is the 3rd season in a row that the Eagles have a new head coach. They have a talented squad however do they have leadership to give the championship a shake this season?

I hear that the Spartans have recruited well for the season. They have had 2 conerstones of the club represent Australia recently which means more knowledge to bring back to the club. Also with last seasons late momentum i see the Spartans as the big improvers for 2009.

I have heard very little about the Oilers for this upcoming season. So i guess they are the great unknown. But i have a feeling they will play tough brutal football like the Oilers play every season.

SA FIRE State Team 2010

Hi guys,

thought i'd start up a specific SA Fire thread.

To start with, in an attempt to raise funds for the State Team, I have tentatively organised a State Team Superbowl Party at the Adelaide Casino Balcony Bar for Monday the 8th of February.

We need a minimum of 100 guests to get the venue, so i'm counting on everyone to do their best to get other players/friends/family/people off the street to buy tickets.

Cost is $30 and it gets you a light breakfast (bacon'n'egg muffins and ham & cheese croissants), drink specials during the game and the Casino's All-you-can-eat Buffet Lunch afterwards.

There will be raffles, and sweeps during the game, so please get onto asking everyone if they can make it. PM me if you have any questions!

Most Feared/Respected Player from each State

You can name guys from your own state or other states too if you have clashed with them at previous Nationals.

Think of one each for Offense, Defense and Special Teams if you can.
Would be great to get some names of players to watch or look out for at the Nationals in April!!

NSW WOLFPACK 2010

This is just an update on Wolfpack and what's happened so far. I'll be updating this thread over the coming weeks to let you know the latest.

The coaching staff has been appointed and the team management is in place. It is the strongest possible team. Now the goal is to BUILD THE BEST POSSIBLE SQUAD to represent the stafe.

I've already had the chance to talk to quite a few players about Wolfpack and the message is simple. We want to select the best football players available. We'll be choosing players ready and able to contribute at Nationals level. No jersey wearers, no development players, no guys who shouldn't be there. We're looking at everyone from veterans to rookies. Selection will be on merit, not reputation. The goal is to select, train and play the best.

Already a lot of scouting has taken place, both live and on film. The best way to put yourself in the frame is to play well for your club. Wolfpack activities will commence after the season ends.

The first stage will be physical testing. This will be used as an additional tool to assess players. You can get details of this by going to the NSW Gridiron web site and emailing. Include your details of team, number and position.

The selection process is being finalised and I'll update your on that soon. Keep an eye on this thread and the Gridiron NSW site.

Im a new player going to play for one of the NSW teams this year, Either UTS or Preds, and wondering what combine stats should i be aiming at?

Im wanting to play DE,LB or FB, realistically probably not going to that this year but yeh. If anyone has the stats on like 40 yard, bench and vertical leap, broad jump etc. for these positions, be greatly appreciated so i can aim at something as i start getting back in shape.

I just want a show of interest of who would be willing to play in a free entry, no prize (for now) flag football tournament. Held in Croydon. most probably. or around there, on saturdays (mainly cause i have to transportation.)

It will be 7 a side, limited downs for length of entire field (undecided on field size thinking 1/2 sizish) blocks to shoulders behind L.O.S only, all men eligible, 5 seconds before blitz, No QB runs (unless handed off first)

something like that anyway.

This is a call to any player, coach or admin person that participated in the 2003 Junior Australian Team that went to New Zealand. I remember their were some professional team photos taken on one of the days indoors of us all in our polo shirts (The entire team, spliit up by State, split up by club) that for some reason I was never able to get.

If anyone has access to copies of these photo's, or any others from that trip, whether they be game photos or otherwise, please reply to this thread and let me know. Thanks heaps.

2011 World cup

So its been about 2 months past the due date of the announcement of the HC appointment for the 2011 World cup team and still no news from our illustrious GA board.

last gossip was there were 5 applicants of which 2 have pulled out.

Leaving 3...1 from NSW, and 2 from VIC....one of the whom is ex NFL Europe, but has never contributed in any way at the local level in the Vic league either at state or local competition, in fact the only time he wanted to be involved at state level, he wanted to get paid for his trouble.

As usual...the GA board are dragging *** on getting anything done or meeting their own deadlines...effectively making it more difficult than it has to be to get the team organised...and with the Nationals looming...how is the HC meant to get organised to make selections at the tourney.

Anyone have any news or comment?

There has been a lot of movement in the league this year and a lot of coaching changes which should make for an interesting year.

Everyone must be looking forward to next year as well with a 6th team in the Comp being the Wildcats.

Amazing that Canberra can support 6 seniors teams with a population of 350,000. Must be doing something right.

I see the Seahawks still have their woes, going by the newspaper article this week in the local. It mentions an ex player has taken away their goal posts to be used for his new team. Does this mean there's a new club in the league?

Passed away today after a battle with Alzheimer's.

I remember him hosting Tuesday night football on ABC like it was yesterday. The day the NFL shifted from the ABC pretty much every Gridiron league in Australia suffered an exodus of players.

Added colour and life to the broadcast, highlighted by Eddie McGuire and Simon O'Donnell's "efforts" to do the same on channel nine.

Hi guys well no matter where you are in Australia a lot of things are happening and the same can be said for our State with most teams now starting their preseason we are very happy to let you know that we have expanded over here in the west.

We have 1 Brand new Team Called the CCSports West Coast Fire

They are in our eastern part of WA the second team is a split up of the Westside Steelers who now have over 60 players and so as we do not have Byes the have split up their team into a A and B sides.

Guys, i thought in the interests of building a bit more of a community here at the Bear, it might be an idea to say a bit about ourselves and put some personality behind the usernames etc. I get pretty confused reading some of the threads where people refer to each other by their names and places and whatever, and i have to try to put everything together for clarity ;)

Anyway, a bit about me.....
Justin Fernley, 41 years old, played and coached Gridiron from 1985 to 1997 for the now defunct Centurions in the Queensland comp after playing Rugby in my schoolboy years and then a couple of seasons of Rugby League after school. Got into the game as a bit of a diversion courtesy of my older brother Peter. Played QB, TB, WR, CB, FS and OLB.
Now living (since 1997) in Bundaberg (due to a work opportunity at the time) with my wife and six kids where Gridiron is little more than a swear word for this hardcore Rugby League town. After getting my already beaten up body beaten up even more playing a bit of League and Union in Bundy, I now spend my days playing Over 35's Rugby and living a gridiron existence vicariously through places like the Bear.

Hey guys,
Just a bit of a back ground on myself. Im 21, I played Rugby Union and Rugby League for around 15 years not including this year. For the last 3 or so I was the goal kicker, General Play kicker and whatever. I wanted to know roughly how far they Punt and Kickoffs and stuff like that. The biggest I've ever made a kick from was about 63metres out with a rugby ball. I can kick a normal kick a solid distance (atleast 50 on full) and spiral further. Just wondered if anyone could lead me in the right direction if I would be any good.

NZ Gridiron at Nationals

I was wondering if there ever was/have been/will be plans to allow teams from New Zealand to compete at the Australian Nationals tourney. Judging by the fact that only not all Australian states were represented at the last tournament would it not be beneficial for there to be some Oceania tournament?

I get that it would be expensive, but there it would be only marginally more expensive for New Zealand teams to travel to aus than it would be for other states, WA for example. Following recent 'turbulence' with the NZ gridiron association, that i assume has since been corrected, surely it would lend to the credibility of both bodies to pursue some kind of joint venture.

Take the recent success of the Australian Outback team in Europe and the lessons learned and experience gained by the NZ Jnr team at the IFAF Junior World Cup. Surely these recent international fixtures could serve as some kind of launching point for growing the sport in Oceania, to the point where the Oceania representative at the next world games would be competitive. Wouldn't expanding the nationals to include teams from New Zealand (whether its a national team, teams from the two islands or individual provincial teams) build upon this foundation? at least as a start?

I was wondering if there was a way to have in a specific folder within youtube or website for all the youtube videos on the net from all the state competitions within Australia. I dont know if there is a way of doing this or even having a website that could host these with some format that would allow a viewer to view all the states and then go into a state and search a team and the footage with that team tagged in it.

I dont know if i explained this well but for example:

Look up Gridiron Australia directs you to this link, then open up a state e.g. NSW, then choose a club e.g. Wollongong Mustangs. From there every video with the Mustangs in it will be shown and can be watched.

Is there such a creature that could do this? not to mention is it a simple thing to set up or would it be a time and money consuming exercise? I have nothing to do with IT so I have no idea.

OZ under 19s duped out of JWC World Cup

For those that dont know, GA have been in possession of letteres that clearly show that NZ under the auspices of a Leroy Sisnett President of an organisation called the NZAFA has lied and duped Australia out of the JWC tournament in CAnton Ohio this year.

Its is clear that Mr Sisnett and his wife (secretary) Far Sisnet did not make it plain and clear to GA that the NZAFA body was not nationaly recognised by the NZ equivalent of Sport Australia (SPARC). Neither did they make this clear to the football community in NZ who I beieve have only just found out what has transpired.

I will copy and paste a letter I have received from Sparc to Leroy and the NZAFA which makes this plain and clear. He has lied to GA, lied to the OFAF board and most importantly lies to IFAF and the NZ football community..Letter is as follows

[b]TO PARENTS of the JUNIOR WORLD CUP 2009

This is an open letter to all the Parents involved with the Junior World Cup Campaign. Some information has been brought to my attention that I do believe you should know. This information seriously puts at risk our boys opportunity to play in the JWC and shows clearly that Leroy Sisnet his wife Far Sisnet and the management team have been working under a cloud of lies and deception.

I am a supporter of a Parent in the JWC and have been concerned by the costs initially paid out for the Australia campaign, the fact that a letter was just sent out asking Parents to communicate with no one other then JWC staff and now to find our requirements to compete were a lie and we were actually never in a position to play Australia.

1.New Zealand has NO National Governing body.

Leroy and Far as AFNZ and NZAFA board members have failed in their duties as board members to produce at any time financial books to account for well over 100.0000 dollars that has been given to the NZAFA and AFNZ by the TAB. Despite a national forum in 2008 where he stated “they were at the accountant” a year later and nothing.

We have since found out that in March of last year the AFNZ of which Leroy and Far were the only remaining board members was struck off from NGO status by SPARC because they failed to hold a single AGM and books were never released to SPARC when requested. Please read SPARC response to Leroy regarding NGO status.

New Zealand American Football Association Application for Recognition

In response to your recent application for SPARC recognition for the New Zealand American Football Association (NZAFA), this letter is to inform you that this application has been declined.

There are a number of issues outstanding regarding the governance of American Football in New Zealand with respect to the previously recognised governing body, American Football New Zealand (AFNZ).

These requirements were not met, which lead to AFNZ recognition being revoked on 14 March 2008. This is despite attempts by SPARC in 2007 to engage with AFNZ and leeway being given to allow AFNZ to satisfy the requirements, to no avail.

There is some history of non-compliance not only with SPARC requirements, but also with the Incorporated Societies Act. AFNZ failed to satisfy its legal obligations and lost its legal status, which SPARC assumes relates to non-filing of any annual accounts since the establishment of AFNZ. This does not give SPARC confidence in the operations of American Football at present.

2.Leroy Lied to Gridiron Australia and the International Federation of American Football about National Body Status.

Despite knowing that without a National Body we could not compete for the JWC Leroy and Far as well as the JWC management and coaching Staff decided to lie about this and pretend that we had a National Governing Body when in fact we didn’t. Leroy knew in March 2008 this was the case and also in November 2008 when our application was declined by SPARC.

Here is an excerpt from the letter Leroy and Far wrote to IFAF and Gridiron Australia written Friday 27 February 2009.

An application has been submitted to SPARC for endorsement and we are confident that once the review process has been completed and any issues or concerns that SPARC may have relating to our new name is answered and that the NZAFA will receive ratification from SPARC for the NSO status. SPARC are aware of the recent accomplishments of the NZ Iron Blacks and have provided a letter of support to the NZAFA and the NZ Iron Blacks.

SPARC I am told were aware of what he had done and did write a letter of support for the JWC but in no way did that letter say the NZAFA or AFNZ were our National Governing Body. Because that was not true. Leroy goes on to lie about how things are in New Zealand and states that every two years in New Zealand there is a review process.

In New Zealand, as with most countries we would assume, all national sports organizations must go through a review. In NZ it is every two years, a bi-annual process and the sport of American Football in NZ is currently undergoing this review process with Sport and Recreation NZ ‘SPARC’ the governmental body.

This is despite the fact on the NZAFA website and common knowledge to most of the American Football Community, that Leroy and Far have lead the sport in a cloud of secrecy and with little or no accountability at all and that there has never ever been a bi annual review process and that this is just another lie. On one hand he tells IFAF and GA that we have a bi annual review and on the website he states the April Forum was the first of its kind in 28 years.

In most recent years the local competitions in Auckland and Wellington have under gone subtle changes so that the sport of American Football remains a viable choice for potential players and members. During Anzac weekend in April 2008 the first ever national forum was facilitated by the NZ American Football Association in Auckland. Stakeholders from every club and the one regional body attended the forum to address the history and plan for the future of American Football in NZ.

3.Leroy and Far and the JWC management team have lied to you and lied to the American Football Community world wide.

Leroy and Far have put New Zealand in a position where it may well lose the right to represent Oceana at the JWC because they have failed in their duties as Board members to sustain a working and accountable relationship with SPARC.

This failure has lead to SPARC removing NGO status from the AFNZ and despite Leroy knowing this he has continued a deception with Gridiron Australia, the International federation of American Football and you Parents of players in the JWC.

The fact of the matter is we were never in a place to play because according to IFAF rules we must have a body with National governing body status. Without that we cannot compete in IFAF competitions or in the JWC. According to the IFAF website the NZAFA is the national governing body for American Football in New Zealand. This is a lie.

Despite this Leroy, Far and the management of the JWC proceeded ahead lying on the way to include New Zealand in a competition that they were actually not able to compete in.

4.Where to from here as Parents and supporters.

This weekend the American Football community, are voting in a new body and new executive and will at some stage have to deal with the lies and deceit left by Leroy and Far Sisnet and the JWC staff. He is I am told going to be removed from any responsibilities in American Football In New Zealand and will have to give account for how he has allowed all this to happen. What you choose to do is up to you here is the information that I believe has been distributed around the country. You make your own mind up.

Besides the pending '09 Outback Campaign, what is the "average joe" doing to stay motivated and in shape until the '10 NSWGFL season?

Any other FLAG COMPS other then UTS and Syd U?
