GASA Season 2009

I thought it was about time for a new thread that we can discuss the upcoming season rather trolling through pages on the old thread

So it sounds like this may be quite a different year

How are the teams looking in preparation for 2009?

There have been a coaching changes at the Razorbacks and Eagles (these are all i know of)

I hear that the Chiefs have great numbers again. They have recruited a Big College lineman. I see them being the yard stick this season. This is a great young team looking to take the next step.

I hear that the Razorbacks have lost a number of veterans this season, that combined with the coaching changes it will be the first in quite a while that we might not know what to expect for the Razorbacks.

I hear that the Eagles again have good numbers (how do they do it?). This is the 3rd season in a row that the Eagles have a new head coach. They have a talented squad however do they have leadership to give the championship a shake this season?

I hear that the Spartans have recruited well for the season. They have had 2 conerstones of the club represent Australia recently which means more knowledge to bring back to the club. Also with last seasons late momentum i see the Spartans as the big improvers for 2009.

I have heard very little about the Oilers for this upcoming season. So i guess they are the great unknown. But i have a feeling they will play tough brutal football like the Oilers play every season.

truth. GASA board is currently talking to a couple of other venues. Your club rep who attends GASA meetings will know this info.

In Victoria, we mandated that clubs pay for 6 to attend. That way, people ususally show up, since they're paid for anyways. We've had pretty good attendance at the last few as I understand it.

I agree with Matty we should make it a bigger event. Something everyone wants to go to rather than a chore.

I understand that from the big man himself (Sedge) that we will have the All Star awards presented at a preseason dinner in conjuction with the 25 year. I am also of the understanding that the selections have yet to be made.

I agree a 15 week season sounds like a good idea certainly better then a 8 game season. I don't agree with the idea of no all star dinner or awards i think its a good way of rewarding people who have had a great season.

I think if anything the awards night should be made more prestigious, like the brownlow or the border medal night, where each team has a few players suited up, and the league does a count etc... Obviously players attending will have to contribute to it..... just a idea, but i have not been to one for a few years so it might already been done??

Here's an idea, perhaps we should consider going to a 15 week season (everyone plays 3 rounds and has 3 byes) starting in, say, mid-october, and finishing in mid-feb, with the PF and GF played in the last two weeks of February, then we have the all-star/league presentation dinner in the last week of March....

Just a thought.

Maybe have a pre-season function in late September to launch the year and as part of that present the all star awards.

Personally i think we should scrap the dinner for last season. The season finished 4 months ago and has pretty much been all but forgotten about, especially with the state trip having occurred as well. With the end of the season looking likely to be the last Saturday before x-mas each year it makes it hard with venues and available dates around that time of year. We need to make a decision to either have it prelim final week or plan it for a specific date 2-3 weeks into next years and just stick with it.

I believe that the coaches have selected the GASA 2009 All-Star team and that a couple of different ideas for venue/time for the presentation were considered. I suspect that it was complicated because the season finished so close to Christmas and then the preparation for Nationals began early in the New Year.

Hi guys,

just thought i'd drop by and say hello. I have recently moved down from brisbane and have played for 12+ years.

I am currently looking at doing some coaching and possible playing (depending on how my old bones feel!! lol) I have contacted the spartans (via there email) about this and if any of the spartans guys could get back to me about this that would be great, I see they had not the best of years and want to offer my knowledge and expirence to them.

I know the season just ended and that it's just after new years but i am impatient and excited about a new challenge!!
