What a start to the College year!

First up, Michigan gets stunned by DIV 1AA Apelachian State and their spread speed offense. Then the big blue get trumped again by Oregon and alarm bells are ringing. Their only win of the year comes against the Irish who can't even score an offensive TD! RB Mike Hart must be kicking himslef for not declaring last year...

As for the Irish, Charlie Weiss has run off his only other quality starter to transfer, Jimmy Clausen is no where near what he was hyped to be out of High School and is definitely not even close at the moment to older brother Casey. Weiss, being an offensive genius can't even score an Offensive TD - what the hell is going on in South Bend?

On positive's - LSU is simply rolling. Losing Jamarcus Russel won't hurt them at all and i predict an LSU v Florida shootout with Tim Tebow for the National Championship. Anyone else care to speculate this early in the season who the big dance will be between? USC will be strong but i can't see anyone beating these two teams - at least Florida anyway.

Any opinions on players performing well this year?

Bear

You've gotta feel sorry for Clausen - coming off as the best QB from high school, he has been sacked 15 times so far in his 3 games. And when thats not happening, he's being flushed out of the pocket and scrambling for his dear life or being tackled for a loss of yards.

USC still on top of the poles.. just where i like them. Booty is still a shot at Heisman, as no candidates have really taken a grasp upon it - Though Colt Brennan has been putting up some mind boggling numbers. What are your opinions on him, Best QB in the nation?

Its good to see there's a LITTLE activity going on on these forums.

LSU v Florida shootout with Tim Tebow for the National Championship.

Well, that's all but impossible, since they play each other once during the regular season, then (if they both make it), the SEC championship game. No way two teams from the same conference play for the national championship, unless they both have one loss, and every other conference champion has two losses.

ND looked BAD in their last loss, but not as horrible as Charlie Weiss did. 4th down, late in the 4th quarter, you're down by 38 POINTS and you punt? What kind of gutless chickenshit is that? Then, you're driving late in the 4th, you haven't scored an offensive TD all season, knowing that at least one gimmie TD agains the UM scrubs will at least save you and your team a billion questions about if you'll score that season, and you don't burn your timeouts, AND run the ball. That just shows he had given up on his team and the game. I can't believe he had the nerve to sit at that press conference. I'm not an alum, but if I was, I'd be calling for his head on a platter for that gutless coaching job.

If you believe the hype, USC is the team to beat in the Pac 10. Don't believe it. I saw the game againt Nebraska. If Bill Callahan had any cojones (aka BALLS), they'd have whooped USC. But he doesn't. Proof? Down 21 -10 at home, with about 1:25 in the 2nd quarter, the team has two options - go into half-time down 11 to the #1 team in the nation AT HOME, or try to drive the field and get points. Nebraska, at first, ELECTS TO KILL THE CLOCK. AT HOME. WTF!?!?!?!?!? USC then pulls two BAD penalties, including a PI, which gave Nebraska posession at around midfield with less than 20 seconds on the clock, plus a TO I think. Nebraska had proven the could throw all over USC during the first half - why wouldn't you try to throw against a soft pass rush and a prevent defense? You throw underneath to the middle, pick up 15 yards at a time, run up to the line and spike the ball, then do it again! You've got the clock on your side, cause it stops in college on first downs, plus your timeouts, plus stoppage on an incomplete pass. Long story short, Nebraska doesn't score, goes into half time wondering what if, and USC blows them out in the second half. Against a coach with more balls, (I'm looking at you Cal/Oregon), USC loses, and it won't be that close.

I'm going out on a FAR limb and picking Rutgers to play in the national title game vs Ohio State, and here's why:

Rutgers can beat Louisville in Louisville, as Kentucky proved last week, and they get West Virginia at home. WVU will be their toughest game, but getting it at home is a huge boost. If they win that game, they'll go undefeated through the rest of the Big East.

OSU has no competition in the Big 10. Period. Michigan is d-u-n done, PSU has walloped on daisies so far and won't be able to move against OSU's defense, much like the rest of the nation. Wisconsin is the only real threat to an unbeaten season, and they get them at home.

The SEC won't get a one loss team into the national championship game this year - it's WAY too tough a conference, they'll all be dead by the end of the season - same with the Pac - 10. Oklahoma could come out of the Big 12 unbeaten, but considering how bas the Big 12 is, they'll be left out on their strength of schedule. My Bowl picks:

Sugar Bowl (BCS Champ) - Rutgers v. OSU
Fiesta (Big 12 Champ v. SEC champ) Oklahoma v. LSU
Rose (Pac 10 v. at large) - Cal v. Fla
Orange (ACC Champ v. at large) BC v. USC

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong BigGrin

Maybe it'll be when South Florida heads up to Joisy to take on Rutgers that we'll see the Big East title decided. Louisville and Cincinnati do pose a threat to USF's run, don't get me wrong, but they're coming to Tampa and I'll be on-hand to make sure Florida's BEST FOOTBALL PROGRAM (as of today, anyway - check the rankings) takes care of business.
(and ... I'll be a realist ... we're overrated, we didn't play like a #6 on Friday night - especially on O - but we sure as hell made a damn good team look very bad ... the best thing about it is, we can still improve)

On the SEC front, after Auburn's win over Florida (amazing) that pretty much means it's LSU or nobody as far as National Champion contenders... and there's every chance LSU will fall to somebody at least once, which might write them all off. (Kentucky are good, but I don't think they'll stay unbeaten)

So for all the money, and in spite of their mediocrity over the past few weeks, I'm going to have to say USC vs. Ohio State looks like the pick for the Championship Game.

(Unless, and God knows I'm hoping, South Florida really AREN'T over-rated and win out, plus put the hurt on Rutgers in a big way to earn enough style points to move up a few more spots, and get a few Big-10 results to go their way.... is that too much to ask for a program in its 11th ever season? I mean... we're fastest to Top 25 and Top 10, why the heck not?)

Well well - so far, my predictions (save rutgers) are holding up quite nicely.  AND, I still maintain 90% on that prediction because South Florida is still a Big East team, if they get into the BCS title game, I'll have at least picked the right conference to be represented.  Woo!

As I predicted, USC lost - and it was at home to Stanford!  Figured it would have come a bit later on - maybe that's why they stumbled against the Cardinal.

ND continues to suck - expect them to go 2-10 and have the worst finish for the Irish in modern history.  Also, expect them to lose to Navy.

Big 12 is looking a bit more fun with the Big 12 North finally showing some signs of life after 7 years of slumber, but the elite still can't compete against the South (see Mizzou's gag job against OK).  K state and Colorado pulled upsets, sure, but that all they were - UPSETS.  Not convincing wins over equal opponents.  Talk to me when a North team beats a South team in the Big 12 championship game.  Until then, I'm not interested.

SEC is tops in the land again, but no one is undefeated.  Say goodbye to the BCS title game.

ACC is GOD AWFUL.  BC will get exposed as a fraud when they play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg this weekend.  Unless they win.  In which case, pencil them in now as the team to replace Auburn and Texas as the biggest whiners in BCS history when they get left out in the cold.

Dan it looks like the Bulls poor showing (and the horrid officiating) have killed the Big East's best chance of making it to the NC this year..... unless WVU wins out and keeps climbing the rankings, and plenty of other results go their way.

Of course... if that happens, and USF wins out too (we should, but it might be tougher with a few key injuries now) then we'll still win the Big East title (RU will finish 5-2, USF and WVU will finish atop at 6-1, and USF owns the tiebreaker).

The problem is the human pollsters still get 2/3 of the vote, and they don't want a Big East team there (certainly not USF, anyway).
Come on computers, pull us through!

And really... if you look at the BCS Standings as they are now, you have to think that:

(1)Ohio State
(2)Boston College
(4)Arizona State
(9)Kansas
(11)Florida

are going to lose at least one more game .... (and (12)USC I think are gone - their wins aren't quality, and their loss was atrocious)

I think Ohio State will lose to Penn State this weekend, and Michigan later, even though their defense has finally come to the party.

BC will lose tonight at VT. BC has no quality wins. They'll drop further than USF did (we are still #5 in the computers) but will have enough games left to move back up again.

Arizona State still has Cal, UCLA, Oregon and USC. They could lose all four.

Florida still faces Georgia and South Carolina on the road, then a possible SEC title game. They'll be lucky to only lose one.

Kansas has Missouri then a probable title game against Oklahoma. I don't think they win both.

That leaves
(3)LSU
(5)Oregon
(6)Oklahoma
(7)Virginia Tech
(8)West Virginia
(10)USF
... the most likely to win out and move up.

LSU wins out, and wins the SEC. Hope they really put the hurt on Bama and Saban, too.

Oregon gets USC and Arizona State at home. Unless Oregon State really upsets the applecart in the last week, they'll win out. How badly does the loss to Cal hurt them in the polls? Time will tell.

Oklahoma could almost mail it in for the rest of the season, save for the Big 12 title game. Win that and I think they jump Oregon for the chance to play LSU in the Championship Game.

Unless... Virginia Tech wins out and wins big. They have BC coming in tonight, and I think they stomp them, then a tester at Virginia to close out the season. Win that one and the ACC, and THEY might jump Oregon and face LSU.

As for WVU and USF... it's Big East games all the way home. The Mountaineers should account for Rutgers this weekend, otherwise neither team plays any "big" opponents. Upside - they should win out. Downside - not many style points to be earned.

And now... for the final top 10 prediction:

(1)LSU
(2)Oklahoma
(3)Oregon
(4)Virginia Tech
(5)West Virginia
(6)USF
(7)Ohio State
(8)Kansas
(9)Boston College
(10)Georgia (check out the rest of their schedule - their next loss will be to LSU in the SEC title game)

There.... that should get some discussion happening (especially since the two teams I picked for the NC less than a month ago have now slid to #7 and #11+ in my revised picks)

Bloody hell. Wrong already.

Someone needs to teach VT the game goes for 60 minutes, not 58. Oh wait... someone just did.

Still, this is one of those good results for USF. I am still sure BC will lose to someone, because they sure as heck didn't deserve to win this one. That should drop both BC and VT down below USF once we win out Smile

Griff -

Don't get too excited about Kansas.  After seeing Mizzou obliterate the vaunted Texas tech offense, I'm sure the Tigers can find a way to shut down KU and Man-gina's pedestrian attack.  Granted, cause of the downy soft schedule, KU will probably enter the finale against Mizzou unbeaten, but they'll lose and lose big to them.  Expect Mizzou/Oklahoma in a rematch for the big 12 title, and expect OK to NOT want to see Mizzou again.

WVU may or may not win out, they still have to play Rutgers on the road, which has proven to not be a friendly place for ranked opponents.  I don't see them getting in the back door.

Everyone is so high on LSU, but considering how tough the SEC is this year, I don't think a single team will come out with less than 2 losses.  Really, every team except LSU now has 2, and are gonna tell me LSU will make it through the conference schedule, plus the SEC title game with only 1 loss?  Unlikely.

You know who may really surprise people is Arizona State.  While they haven't really played anyone, they are 7-0 and get Cal and USC at home.  Both teams have lost at home this year, and road games are always tougher in the scortching desert.  The real test will be at Oregon in two weeks.  If they win that one, expect a TON of talk about them being national champ darlings.

Now, here's the really funny thing, Hawaii is still unbeaten and get Fresno State, Boise State, and Washington AT HOME.  While none of those teams are ranked, Hawaii is #14 nationally, and if the top teams falter (as they will have to as some play each other), Hawaii could conceivably move into the top 5, possibly the top 2 if they keep winning and the world collapses around them.  Could Hawaii be the next non-BCS power to crash the money party?  I'm betting they will.

NEWS FLASH - with BC just winning at VT I humbly eat crow and now tab BC to be the front runner to play OSU in the national title game.  OMFG, how does a team from BOSTON win in Blacksburg?  I wish I was home, this season is freakin amazing!
