Hi All,Just looking for some information that other clubs around australia may have tried or are doing to recruit people to play in australia. Our club has done the everyday this such as posters and advertising and various other things without much success and would love your help to try to expand out player list above 20 people for next season. I hope to hear from you all soon. Don't be angry at me. Your O Line is the reason you are on your back

G'day Cougar, it's a topic that's been canvassed many times on these boards but to cut through the crap here are some methods that have worked with varying degrees of success:
Articles in local newspapers, particularly during preseason and with a closing paragraph "If you are interested in playing, training is ... and ... nights, or contact ..... ...... for more details"
Letterbox drops
Clinics held at schools
Myspace page which allows blanket messaging (spam anyone?) to people based on postcodes
Advertising (newspapers, radio)
But IMHO the two things which are essential are:
A website that is regularly updated, professional and rates highly on a google search.
And the number one option is handing out flyers in shopping centres directly to any guy aged 15 and above, especially some of the bigger guys. Aim for 200 flyers handed out on a weekend and you can expect 10 calls/emails. Use this as a building block.
Mark Levin started a brand new team in Sydney with this method. Starting in January for a season starting in August and with only me, and two others as players, we managed to build a full squad in time for the season.
I hate shoving flyers in peoples face and you can expect security to kick you out if they catch you but it is the single most effective way of building numbers.

I have to agree with HO. As a founding member of the MINERS in 1988(actually started in 1986) we did all of which HO has stated. In the period 1999 to 2005 it appeared the club forgot all those basic things and dropped to a squad of 15 by the end of 2005 when 10 years earlier had a squad of 60.Since January 2006 we have gone back to the old and tried methods and started the 2007 season with 47 registered players. With natural attrition we ended the year with 42 pledging to be back in '08. We also hand flyers out at local Agricultural shows, carnivals and festivals from November right through to april of the current season. It also pays to take advantage of movies like Gridiron gang etc and get to the cinemas and hand out flyers. Game Plan is out on November 1. We have aslo done promotional Nights at local Night Clubs with dancers etc. But we are lucky to be sponsored by the local night Club. You just cant beat leg work!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you could also try contacting your local council they will have sports days ,carnivals and the like that you can participate in and it doesnt hurt to know someone at council when you need to ask for something ,field upgrades etc the hardest part is getting people to know your there and that they play gridiron in australia get used to the question "do they play that here?"

It wouldn't hurt to maybe have exhibition days too. Give people a chance to catch and throw and see that they'd like it before turning up to night 1 and expected to start learning plays.
Perhaps do some flag too on the exhibition day so people can get an idea of what the game is like without the threat of injury.
Internet has to be of almost number 1 importance. Getting a good website is good. Posting some video of the team in action and in training on YouTube is probably really good too.
Evan.
