I noticed that the Victorian team Bay City Buccs managed to score a grant of 'up to $1000 to pay for uniforms and other equipment' and thought that this forum could be a good way of swapping info on obtaining such grants.
For a fledgling sport such as ours, this type of stuff is our life blood as $1,000 to $5,000 can mean the difference between existence and exitinction.
Typically a state government grant (as was the case with the Buccs) but what exactly is available?
How do you apply?
Does persistence pay off?
Or is it better to contact people known to you in high places?

The MINERS also got that grant and a further $2000 from City of Casey. Speak to your councils.

What was the grant for? Was it offered to other sporting clubs and was it advertised? Or did you seek it out yourself?

Hey guys,
The grant was advertised, throughout many newspapers and was offered to all sporting clubs in Victoria.
I carefully read what the requirements were and addressed each of them individually.
Out 173 applicants in the Geelong and surrounding regions only 15 were successful. The Bucs being one of them.
We were invited to attend the announcement at Skilled stadium and had Coach's in club gear and players in full kit to take full advantage of the media attendance. The minister for sport, said it fantastic to see GRIDIRON
finally getting some recognition in the state.
The grant was for $1000 and was a Youth Uniform Grant.
It wasnt that hard, just made sure that we covered each of the requirements carefully.

(this is only KIND OF in the same vein as "free money", but...)Is/are GV doing anything this year to try and get a main/league sponsor? I know there was something going on last year, but this year...? Is there a marketing plan for 2008?

^ the short answer is yes, yes, and also we now have a contact at the MX. League marketing and promotions meeting in a few weeks to finalize that aspect. Am in the process of targeting a major sponsor who may be interested in naming rights (at present, a $10,000 value). However, given that TGI's also said they wanted this but dropped down, I'm not holding my breath. But any news is good news at this point in time.

From News Limited's local papers:
"Grassroots Gold
Leader has teamed with RACV Show Your Card and Save and Rebel Sport to widen the promotion, opening it up to senior and junior clubs.
Major prizes include $10,000 in Rebel Sport gear for the overall winners, $5,000 for second and $2,500 in gear for third.
Each of Leader's 33 newspapers will also award a $1,000 voucher to a local senior and junior club.
Last year's Grassroots Gold giveaway attracted 700 nominations, resulting in 90 clubs across Melbourne receiving equipment.
To enter tell us in 100 words or less why your sports club needs new gear. Entries in writing, audio or video format, will be judged on demonstrated need for new gear and creativity of the entry.

OK, there's been quite a bit of reasonable discussion going on 'round here so I'll spend some time on this post - feel FREE to comment or shoot my ideas down, open discussion and criticism are always good.
Warrior27 - glad to see you've come back! Some NICE posts there!
MEDIA-
Dan - nice work on the MX angle, did they get a new chief sports sub-editor? I worked at HWT and can tell you previous editors didn't like our sport. If it helps you I CAN forward you an email with some script in it that will send your info/results into HWT's Cybergraphic platform allowing them to see your results in their preferred file (they call it a "desk") as soon as they get in.
ALSO - Do you still get results into Monday's Herald Sun sport results (5-point)? If not, let me know.
(Apologies to Tony Martin - I'd lost that script for ages and only found it again a three months ago!)
With the Herald Sun - Like most media, if you establish ties and show them you are making an effort FOR them (journos and sub-editors), you'll get a LOT more help! Also, maybe GV should spend $50 on those GA mini helmets - attach some GV info to them and send them in - novelty goes a LONG way in those offices!
(If that don't work give me names, I'll tell you the "dirt" and you can blackmail them!) hehe!
ESTABLISHING MARKETABILITY - I'm going to steal from some AF2 "ideals" here -
It's good that you're trying to get a MAIN sponsor for the season, but IMO GV needs a lot of small sponsors before they can land a real CASH sponsorship.
I'd suggest "product" sponsors as a first step! Everyone has a canteen, go to Smiths chips, Pepsi, four 'n' twenty, etc, etc, and ask them for a donation of goods. IMO, too many people still try to get MONEY, and the odds of GV parting ANY corporation or corner store from their hard earned $$$ are negligible, at the moment.
Not sure how/where you'd store them though, but if GV gets 50 boxes of chips and sell them off to teams at LESS than the bulk order price, GV makes money, teams sell them and make MUCH more money. (Toohey's - back in the day - also gave $X,000 slabs of beer to the VGFL along with cash.)
In RETURN - at the moment, the ONLY thing GV has that's worth selling is SPACE on teams jerseys. The value of sideline ads and newsletters is purely speculative, so I won't waste my time. IMO a few patches or badges on your player's jersey also makes you "look" more like a legitimate team.
SO - If Smiths Chips/Pepsi/Corona give you $4000 in product, in return GV should ask them if they mind ALL of GV players wear their logo on uniforms. Bigger companies probably won't like it, but fledgling companies should bite on the idea! Badges can be ordered and made in Asia for almost NOTHING, if GV ordered them in quantities of 1000 , and you know where to look etc, etc, etc.
I'm not sure of GV's financial position, but if it's good enough, offer to pay for 100 badges for each team, then it's up to the teams to sell/raffle their space for money or goods with local vendors. If one team can't sell the idea while others can, just get "something" made so it gives the image of a sponsor, it's all about the image. (ie - the Warriors could have one that simply says "Hartley" to honour a person in their organization, to the outside world though that's a sponsor, but to them it means something.)
ADVERTISING REP - Don't think GV could afford to pay for someone to try and market themselves at the moment. The answer to this is easy, for year 1, ANYBODY making a sale FOR GV gets a 10-20% cut of GV's final monetary gain. It could get a LOT of cynical people with "connections" to get off their ***!?!
FINALLY - IF you believe that ALL the sideboard "sponsors" at an AF2 game have parted with hard earned CASH to get there, and Sales commissions were NOT paid on any that made a cash sponsorship, don't reply to this message.
Otherwise, questions? Criticisms? Comments?
