Without a doubt, this Jr Nationals Tournament was one of the best football experiences I've ever had - player, coach, or otherwise. I had the pleasure of coaching and coaching with one of the finest group of men ever assembled for Victoria, three times playing teams with twice as many players as ourselves - and never once letting that be an excuse for failures or shortcomings. I saw a team with just 11 players after injuries come back to beat the hometown favorites Queensland with a heart so big it would've powered Phar Lap. I saw the same team come inches, and I mean inches away from again upsetting the higher seed NSW. A truly phenominal effort.
Special Kudos to the organizing committee for bringing in Coach Jeff Rhinebold (Southern Methodist U), who aside from embarassing all of us with his 6 pack abs at 51 years old, was an ambassador of the game, imparting all the knowledge he could offer in his short stay with us. If you didn't learn anything new from him, you were either not listening or dead.
For anyone who wasn't there for the grand final, you missed the closest thing this country gets to a high school state final atmosphere. Our guys said there were times when they couldn't hear the snap count. That's impressive. Well done to all the teams and we'll see you again in 2011.
