NEW YORK — The Arena Football League has suspended operations, a victim of a heavy financial losses in a poor economy after 22 years offering an indoor gridiron alternative to the National Football League.
A statement said the league was unable to reach agreement on restructuring plans in the past eight months after calling off the 2009 season with hopes of making a comeback in 2010.
"There are no other viable options available to the league right now," the league's board said.
The arena league attracted such club owners as rock singer Jon Bon Jovi, retired NFL star John Elway and NFL Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and launched such careers as that of former NFL Most Valuable Player Kurt Warner.
