I thought it was about time for a new thread that we can discuss the upcoming season rather trolling through pages on the old thread

What do people think of the 8 game season?

What do people think of the lack of organisation for the GASA board?

How are the teams looking in preparation for 2010?

There have been a coaching changes a plenty with  Razorbacks, Chiefs and Spartans all having Head Coach changes

I hear that the Chiefs have great numbers again. They will have lost RB Saxon Leary as he tries his hand at college football (i wish him well). Their biggest recruit is Head Coach Shane Challans who has returned to the Chiefs after over 10 years away from the club. Shane is an man who likes his offence and will be excited at the prospect of working with the budding guy stars that the Chiefs have.  What does this mean for Ross Smith? he has worked hard at developing the players and a structure. A new mind may allow the Chiefs get over the line and win that Championship they have been so close to getting the past few years.

I hear that the Razorbacks have good numbers in preseason. The best recruit they have for the year is Channo Yun this pint size sensation will slip straight back into the starting line up and give them a backfield threat to go with the quick decision making of QB Josh Welbourne. But i do hear that they do have some talented rookies as well. Mark Yayger is also rumoured to be returning to coaching this season which will make it very interesting aswell. His return in the finals  last season help the Razorbacks win the Championship for the 5th year in a row.

I hear that the Eagles again have good numbers (how do they do it?). This is first season in a while that the Head Coach has returned . They have a talented squad  but talent will only get you so far. They had a good season last year but could not win the game when it counted. I expect them to be around the mark again.

I hear that the Spartans have recruited well for the season (they needed to) they have some real talent but it is hard when too much is left to too few. They went backwards last year after a promising finish to the previous season. I hope they bounce back. Andy is going to need support from his veteran players as the head coach.

I have heard very little about the Oilers for this upcoming season. So i guess they are the great unknown like every year. But i have a feeling they will play tough brutal football like the Oilers play every season.

Not long until Oct 2

I'll have a go too then. My mail is a bit different to inferno's

8 GAME SEASON - Pretty sure there aren't too many people who are happy with an 8 game season as was the case last year.

GASA BOARD - Pretty sure there is the same amount of new people offering opinions instead of help as was the case last year.

CHIEFS - All reports I have heard is chiefs have lower numbers?? not sure who has heard the right rumours. Will be interesting to see how Challens overpowering offensive focus changes the way the chiefs play. Saxon = massive loss. Defense should remain solid.

PIGS - Always seem to get a few quality recruits each year. Return of Channo is a big boost. Possibly as a defensive player tho. Without Yaegar Pigs WOULD NOT have won title last year. Will be a much better team this season if he is back on board. Have to start as favourites.

EAGLES - The main question is whether they can turn physical abilities into championship football when it counts.

OILERS - Expect a bit more flair and variation now Rob is settled in as a 2nd year coach. Will be tough throughout no doubt

SPARTANS - Need heavy influence from new recruits to push other teams. Depth as usual will be the issue.

It aint c0cky if you back it up!

Seeing as how this is the first year that i am being involved with gridiron in SA, i will try to keep my veiw as unbiased as possible.

I am not really in a position to comment on the progress of teams from last year to this year...so i won't Smile

I'll start on the 8 game season. It's not really ideal. 8 games is far from a "season" and i think that if all the teams get together on this issue then it can be changed and should be. It's done for this season so no point harping on it too much.

So onto the touchy subject of how the league is run. In all reality of things, this isn't a problem for just SA or gridiron, this is an issue accross all sports and states (at the highest and lowest levels). And on that, not everyone is going to be happy with the outcome of some decisions. So for the people being at the decisions end, it's a no doubt a tough job.

BUT to say that it is the players and clubs duties to offer up assistance to the board is a bit of a cop out if you ask me. If the board needs assistance, then if they ask i am sure there are teams and individuals that will be willing to help out. Now like i said. i am new to gridiron in SA, so maybe there has been a call to clubs for people to help out in the past? and has gone on deaf ears.

Overall from what i have been witness to. there is just not enough communication going on in general. Even if it's a trickling system where SAGA emails regular updates to presidents so that info can be passed on to coaches and on turn to players. i think it would take a lot of the criticism of the board away if clubs knew that things were getting done.

some views from myself being 4 weeks out from the season there is still major speculation as to where the games are going to be played. Really this shoudn't be an issue this close to the season. Will it come down to a club having to say we can play at our field or will this issue be sorted out and soon?

The gridrion SA website is a disgrace, this is one thing that just can't be treated with kid gloves. For a start there are 2. GET RID OF 1! It needs to be constantly updated. It's still saying the start of the junior season is underway. Ummmm last time i checked Junior gridiron has finished. You are turning away i would say 75% of people who have a minor interest in the game, that might check it out just once. As for help, people that  i have spoken too have offered help for the site and have beed turned away.

I think thats all i'll say for now. Good luck to all the clubs i am sure there are going to be some surprises this year!!!

and that comment proves my point, if that has been decided then it has not gotten to all the clubs. I have been asking every week. There is a clear lack of communication. I get asked atleast once every training where are we playing the year.

I'll have a go too then. My post is very different again

8 GAME SEASON - I am not stoked, definately looking forward to a 10-12 game season but you can only do what is possible. We do not have a definite ground at the moment, a small board, one of the smallest number bases of any SA sport (seriously, HOCKEY just got a stadium refurbishment and cost us our stadium - WTF??).

I understand some of the veterans prefer a shorter season, no offence meant to anyone, but once the veterans retire from the field and get chaired off, there needs to be enough kids dedicated and prepared to pay to play or its all over. I dont think training for 3-4 months and only being able to play for 8 games (if you dont make the finals) is worth your $300-$400 (+ more if you buy anything that is your own) for being on the bench.

More games gives us more chance to blood and evaluate new players, expose them to game scenarios and situations, rest starters and develop the clubs for the long term. After a year or two of coughing up considerable money for non existant game time many players fade into the mist, waiting for the next bunch of rookies to follow in their steps in the years following.

GASA BOARD - I am sick of hearing people whinge and complain, seriously, if you have so much time to talk sh!t then get out and help in some small way to take the pressure off the board. The board was elected UNOPPOSED again this year and we are losing Sedge after this year so people are going to have to pull their fingers out to keep the league going. Business minded people at that, who work for the best of the league and not for self gain. I feel sorry for the next person that tries to help and is slayed by a bunch of people who are too lazy to help, yet spend hours complaining, take some responsibility. Everyone needs to start thinking big and planning accordingly before we are obsolete and have to travel interstate to play.

CHIEFS - I havent heard much either way about the numbers so I'm assuming the Cheifs boys arent in dire straits when it comes to players. However the key will be to see how much the loss of Learey to Snow College (UT) will affect the ground game. He was a beast. Also it will be interesting to see the development of QB Rusby and seeing if he can get the ball downfield more as opposed to the conservative screen offense that occured in patch of last year. He showed good development throughout the State training and trip from all accounts and there will be numerous other Chiefs who return from this experience as better players. The D has been very solid and features some good players in the secondary particularly.

RAZORBACKS - Channo Yun is ridiculous. He makes the team exponentially better just by being on the field due to the amount of attention that you need to give him and the effort required to tackle the slippery one. Welbourne and the recievers will be ready to go again trying to exploit, someone is going to have to pay closer attention to JB this year at WR after he ran riot last year averaging almost 100 yards a game! Defense will be solid but unspectacular, they know their role, complete it and put the O back on the field.

EAGLES - The second year under a coach should help balance the team, they have a good mix of valuable veterans and raw skills at this point with players at different points in between. Natural skills arent enough to win a title without a strucutre and game plan that works, so a second year with the same strucutre may benefit them. I hear they have some retirements from last year so it will be interesting to see how that impacts the team. Also, will anyone work out how to catch QB Wyten this year? Probably not... and on that, will the motion offense return again?

OILERS - I am looking forward to seeing these boys take steps forward, also sending players to the state team and showing some real talent at training and then following through on the field. Big Rob will be letting that cannon fly to anyone deep so people better be ready. Same hard nosed D as usual with all reports that Bennett moves to a LB position to prepare for the Aussie assault on the World Cup where he will no doubt be a starter for Australia again (Captain last trip!). Numbers will be an issue quite possibly, but I hope not, I'd like to see the boys in blue play a year when they arent gassed from playing a game with 15 players.

SPARTANS - Have some key pieces and some guys that were good at state, most notably Ottens, if a few of the boys were more committed/had more money there would have been more of them there. Will be interesting to see how many juniors from this season step up to the big boys as well, they looked good throughout most of the season but it's a big adjustment from 7 men to 11 on the field. It will also be interesting to see who is QB this year, whether Novice continues or if there is someone new in the wings. Similarly, the Wishbone O will be interesting to see, will it be back, will it be the same? Who plays at WR if the Spartans air it out? Cant wait to see.

Good luck to all

4 WEEKS! BigGrin

Boomer, just to clear it up. In case you weren't aware. the Gasa board is made up of only 3 volunteers. Then 1 member from each club (some clubs forget or cant be stuffed) attends monthly board meetings. As mentioned by grant. When the league calls for help with things, nobody generally offers any assistance.

I just sent a message to Grant. So hopefully there is more of an understanding where i am coming from. I am not out to be critical of the board but to get an idea of where things are and what is happening. If i am critical it is for a reason

Like i said to Grant, some people just don't want to be involved in the pointy end of the league, they just wanna be involved at club level or they just wanna play/coach. which is fine.

Like i said to grant if my time allows and it's something i can do i am more than happy to help. And i think some of the people on here who want to be critical, if they put there hands up and put that 5% effort into the league then i think they would be surprised at how things can change.

I leave with a quote. I was so busy fighting off the crocodiles i forgot to clean the pool.

If there are no Crocs, the pool gets cleaned!!!
